Currently the pressure to pass the ERA Amendment has gained new momentum, as Nevada recently became the first state in three decades to ratify the ERA. Illinois followed. 38 states are required for ratification and 37 have now done so. Only ONE MORE STATE is needed! National organizers are encouraging both Virginia and North Carolina legislators to approve the ERA this year.
On Tuesday, January 15, 2018, the Virginia Senate passed their resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. While Republicans control the Virginia Senate (21 – 19), the vote approving ratification was 26 to 14, with 7 Republicans joining all 19 Democrats. The ERA resolution for ratification is now waiting for action by the Virginia House of Delegates.
If passed there, the ERA Amendment will go directly to the national Archivist for the action required to move this Amendment into the U.S. Constitution.
Meanwhile, ERA ratification bills for both houses of the North Carolina legislature will be introduced soon.
Urge your legislators to be co-sponsors of these bills now!
The NC ERA Alliance is urging this action, since the more NC co-sponsors, the more likely this legislation will be brought up for a vote this year and approved in both houses. Should the Virginia House of Delegates fail to approve, then it will be North Carolina’s opportunity to become the final state required for ratification of the ERA Amendment.
