Content taken off the menus
8/22/2019: It has become clear that the information architecture for the whole site needs a wholesale update. In the meantime the menu structure has been drastically simplified:
- Branches Menu
- Delete “Branch News” – the AAUW NC Mailchimp issues devoted to branches were moved to the main News page and there really is no other “branch news” on the state website (at least not for the last few years).
- Delete “Branch Map” – it has some weird side effects, and TechTriad is possibly finding a whole new solution for branch data
- That leaves the single page, Branch Contacts, and that has been promoted to “Branches” on the main menu
- News Menu
- This used to have an item that went to a list of the old Tar Heel News issues (some with broken links). That was removed
- That leaves the old “Headlines” link as the “News” link
- Events Menu
- The summary posts for earlier conferences need to be tagged in new way, along with any summaries of the AAUW conventions or other “events” that should be highlighted on aauwnc.org. In the meantime the link to “Past Events” which went to only a couple of posts about the 2018 conference has been removed.
- The menu item for the 2019 conference was deleted
- That left only the menu item Upcoming Events. That was promoted to Events on the main menu.
- Documents, Advocacy, and Programs probably need some work, but were left alone for now.
All of the content that was “unlinked” from the menus is still there and can be found with a search. Putting it back will be part of the discussion of what stays on aauwnc.org and what moves to history.aauwnc.org.
Assigned
- TO: ?? – report on election – picture of Diane and Judy saying they were elected. pg 8 of Paul’s, some of Siobhan’s
- TO: ?? – summary of Table Talk — pictures of the Table Talk
- TO: ?? – note about the cocktail reception and Tar Heel anniversary — picture of the four folks and the cupcakes
- TO: Cherrie/Jane – 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial initiative
- TO: Nancy – Jane and Cherrie have sent a summary of conference and a few other docs that need to be posted.
- TO: Nancy – update table of C/U reps (download from MSD) and add a link to the C/U contacts section. [I hadn’t noticed before that TablePress was part of the new site — just sending folks to aauw.org does NOT give them the names of the campus reps.]
- TO: Nancy – find a way to highlight the old annual event (conference, convention, meeting) pages — probably with a tag — and create a menu for them.
- TO: Siobhan – Pictures from the 2019 conference (some have been uploaded to Facebook). Paul Campbell’s are posted at flickr and he’s been asked about the format of the photo credits.
- TO: TechTriad / AAUW NC – Branches pages –
This is now a separate page – https://www.aauwnc.org/site-todo/branch-support-on-this-website/
We may find that we need a brand new strategy to satisfy display of info and ease of updates - TO: Nancy – Draft intro comment for the Maps page (the note about the street addresses no longer applies) and forward to TechTriad for posting (ticket #54). Reference AAUW’s search by zip code and note that Tar Heel is state-wide.
- TO: ?? – How do we want to use the “Type” attribute? To mark the branches by region? (For now they are all marked as “AAUW NC Branch” which, aside from the fact that they are affiliates of the national organization, not AAUW NC, seems completely redundant.)
Pending – Content
- Articles from Nancy’s editorial calendar
Fundraising, 2/1? Membership, Literature award, fellows, etc. - Form to collect comments on the website. [Could be assigned to Nancy, but if anyone else wants to see how to use the Form builder, let her know.]
- The Donate page, https://www.aauwnc.org/donate/ needs to be updated for the new strategic plan.
- TO: Denny/Laura – report on Friday session
- The Types of Membership page needs an update. National members twice? College/University – not to be called “partners” any more. Graduate students and Undergrads are now treated about the same.
Pending – Policy Issues
- How do we want to display a Join link? It’s now both a button and a menu item and the content may also need an update. There can be branch specific links for the MPP branches.
- Who should have access to download the data from forms? Create forms? By default Gravity Forms allows this only to administrators (so Kathy had no access to the list of those registered/their branches when preparing 2019 nametags). There are ways to allow others to access the forms without giving them full access to the backend.
- The forms for collecting info from the branches (scholarships, named gift recipients, projects) are still live – but what would we do with the data? When I set those up, I was thinking the website would be coded to display the data that was entered (the way it displayed the list of folks who had registered for convention), but TechTriad doesn’t seem open to helping with that.
- At the moment the author of a post isn’t being displayed. That’s okay with me — the alternative would probably be remembering to assign the author to “AAUW Editor” for consistency with how the “authored” posts were imported from the old site. If there’s any “opinion” piece on the website, though, it should be signed in the body of the post itself.
- Do we want a specific category (e.g. Announcements?) for things to be highlighted on the list on the home page and in the sidebar?
- Do we want a specific category (e.g. breaking) for posts to go out via MailChimp automagically?
- Do we want to address the problems with the branch map by asking it to be changed to more like the one that’s on the home page (!) of LWV NC – https://lwvnc.org/
- How far back do we want to go with this website. There are now history.aauwnc.org (the posts from the 2018 version of aauwnc.org) and archive.aauwnc.org (the pre-WordPress files; to be used only as links from the WordPress sites). Many posts were deleted in the creation of the TechTriad version of the site, but many very old posts are still there. Conference summary pages go back to
- That list of categories on the left of the News>Headlines page is pretty ridiculous. What do we want to do about it? (I did at least make it show the hierarchy instead of just an alphabetical list.)
Pending – Technical Issues
- Does the conference menu (see #1 under Done) appear anywhere? Should the Conference News be on the Events menu?
- Related to e-newsletter archiving, News > Newsletter Archive menu item goes to the Tar Heel News archive not, as expected, the MailChimp archive. It should be changed.
- On the Documents page, there’s a heading “Board Minutes”. Why “board” — some minutes appear from the annual meetings of the organization. How far back should those minutes go? This is also a problem with the category “Board Business”.
- Was anything from the old .htaccess file migrated? I’m guessing not.
- The board list — what categories should it be in (News?) and how should it be tagged? (If it had been posted last July, it could have been associated with the 2018 conference and News would make sense. Now, not so much. Should 2018-2019 version be postdated?) Once that’s decided it could be converted to a button rather than a text link (maybe showing the most recent post from the Board/Officers category)
- Replace the stock photos with our own
- The Fall 2013 Regional Meeting page is missing some of the auxiliary posts found on the history.aauwnc.org site. Added an element at the bottom to indicate that — may need different styling.
- This post can’t be called, simply, TODO because there’s a TODO.pdf that was uploaded in Jan 2019 but that appears to refer to the 2008 annual meeting. Can it be deleted – with a reference to archive.aauwnc.org/07-08/convention/packet?
- Set up a MailChimp folder for the Branch News issues and add a block to the News>Headlines page to display them.
Pending – Shortcode problems
- Are there any additional references to the [registered] shortcode?
- Found one reference to [contact-form-7 … Are there more?
- Some of the Gravity Forms have been deleted, but the pages where they appeared seem to silently ignore them (rather than showing the shortcode). May take additional investigation to track those downs. For the registration forms, I’ve been deleting the registration page and annotating the summary pages to say the online registration page is no longer available.
Pending – Broken links
- On the (Tar Heel News) Newsletter archive page, some links are broken. They probably can be recovered. But should this entire page get moved to the Archives section? As the “record of the organization” it, more than other old posts, may have a lasting place on the main site.
Nancy’s Executive Decisions
- On the News/Headline page
- Inserted the code to show the e-newsletters in the MailChimp Connect folder. (Laura note that new issues need to be put into that folder.) (Still need to deal with the Branches issues.) Added a subscribe button that’s a link to Mailchimp. (Could be a pop up, but…) We are not going to have a new post for each issue of the newsletter until the rest of the content posting is running more smoothly and it was silly to have one lonely post hanging out there from last December.
- Put blocks for the 5 most recent articles in the News category on the top left column with the subscribe form, but deleted the wordy instructions on how to use the form.
- The bottom section of the page shows all the post titles (even those that aren’t in the News category)
- Changed the “Our Mission” section in the footer so that the first sentence agrees with the wording at www.aauw.org. I’ve no idea about the second sentence so I just left it.
- Added links to some of the top level menu items that weren’t “clickable”. Can go back and do those “right” (as opposed to just changing the “custom link” from “#” to something “real”) if anyone else wants to see how to modify the menu structure.
Done/Resolved
- Why are there two different tags for the 2019 conference? That should be fixed before we start adding articles about the workshops, etc.
Nancy assigned the tag “2019 Annual Conference” to all the posts with either tag and deleted the “2019 AAUW NC Annual Conference” tag since the conference menu had a custom entry for https://www.aauwnc.org/tag/2019-annual-conference. [This may have been wrong since she changed the 2018 conference the other way.] - Nickname changes — Nancy done.
- BY: Nancy. There are two tags for the 2018 conference. Three posts tagged “2018 NC Annual Conference” have to do with registration (though it no longer has the registration form, but the branch projects form) and displaying information about the registrations (content that used to be protected in the Member Center and is now showing up just as an unexpanded shortcode). Those will be deleted.
This resolved a “pending: shortcode” problem — https://www.aauwnc.org/2018-summary/ was from the old Member Center and refers to [registered] shortcode. Since the page was deleted we’re okay. - BY: Nancy. 2018-2019 board list? (see http://history.aauwnc.org/contacts/state) – See https://www.aauwnc.org/aauw-nc-officers-and-key-contacts/.
- BY: Wendy – summary of Watchfire party
- BY: Nancy – changed this “TODO” from a post to a page and published it to make it easier to find.
- TO: Everyone/BY: Jane The “2018 Conference” overview post now has different ways to get to the other posts related to last year’s conference. Jane was the only person who commented — making things look like the blue boxes in other areas of the site seemed to make the most sense.
- BY: Nancy – Removed references to miniloop and converted to the Blog Masonry & Grid in the 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012 meeting pages.
- BY: Nancy -Wouldn’t it be helpful to have some meta data on the single-post pages? If not the author, at least the date published? Maybe at the very bottom of the page where the categories/tags are displayed? Nancy decided “yes” and added the date to the bottom of the default post format.
- BY: Denny/Laura – summary of the ERA by Denny, picture by Laura, posted by Nancy
- BY: Nancy – post Wendy’s summary of watchfire party with picture from Nancy (should be replaced with the photographer’s best)
- BY: Nancy – The passion for turning all links into buttons may be supported by research on usability (particularly on mobile), but doesn’t really work with our content. This is on the back burner for now. The Category pages don’t use the button, but there’s now a widget that will allow the blue buttons to display the results of a search by tag for all the conference summary pages.
- By: Jane/Cherrie – summary of the annual business meeting.
